Hypoallergenic Dog Treats: Why Crocodile Is the Novel Protein to Know

For some dogs, treat time comes with a tax: itchy skin, hot spots, ear trouble, upset stomachs. Food sensitivities in dogs are commonly triggered by the proteins they eat most, and beef and chicken top the list simply because they're in almost everything.

The fix that veterinary nutrition keeps coming back to is the novel protein: a meat your dog has never eaten, so their immune system has no history of reacting to it.

Enter the Crocodile

Crocodile is about as novel as protein gets, and it happens to be a nutritional standout. Often called a superfood for dogs, croc is lean, low in fat and packs almost 50% protein. It's a genuinely hypoallergenic option for dogs that react to common proteins.

Our crocodile treat range is 100% Aussie crocodile, made in small batches, and like every Rover treat it's a single ingredient: no salt, no sugar, no glycerin, no fillers. For a sensitive dog, that matters twice over, because fillers and additives are themselves common culprits behind reactions.

The Croc Lineup

  • Crocodile Jerky. The infamous one. Lean and incredibly high value, our customers tell us dogs lose their minds for it, which makes it a supreme training reward.
  • Croc Chips. Crunchy, textural crisps that are perfect for training and everyday treating.
  • Croc Ribs and more, for dogs that like a chew with their treat.

Beyond Croc: The Novel Protein Menu

Crocodile isn't the only option. Our single-protein range also covers kangaroo, venison, goat, duck, emu and seafood, all uncommon enough in mainstream dog food to serve as novel proteins for many dogs. Explore the full treat range here.

A practical tip: when trialling a novel protein for a sensitive dog, introduce one protein at a time so you can tell what agrees with them. And for ongoing issues, your vet is the right partner in narrowing down triggers.

Risk-Free for the Fussy and the Sensitive

If your dog is not obsessed within 30 days, we give you store credit to try something else, and you keep the pack. Sensitive dogs deserve treat time too. Start with the crocodile range here.
